The Underwriting Manager will provide leadership in the development, marketing and underwriting of commercial lines business throughout our territory. Contribute to company profit and growth objectives by making decisions regarding the acceptability of risks we write through establishing controls and guidelines, frequent detailed analysis of the book of business for adjustments and support in maintaining profitable agency relationships.


Hybrid role, 2-3 days onsite.


  • Responsible for the leadership and development of a commercial lines business unit.
  • Assist in the development of underwriting guidelines.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership on technology platform improvements to include processing and rating relative to commercial lines business.
  • Provide direction and training to commercial lines underwriting staff, including sales representatives, to develop both profitable commercial lines business volume and adequate flow of submissions.
  • Help develop metrics and success criteria to measure and track performance to achieve tactical and strategic goals.
  • Develop and maintain positive agency relationships.
  • Conduct quality reviews to evaluate proper file documentation and to ensure service standards are met.
  • Work with commercial lines staff and peer managers to determine best workflow processes and methods to ensure production, profitability and service standards are met.
  • Identifies and documents business problems and inefficient applications and recommends alternative solutions.
  • Works on special projects that are broad in scope.
  • Continuously monitor and assess underwriter staffing levels, recruitment, performance management, and retention in accordance with Company requirements, processes and policies.
  • Oversee all training, underwriter development and career growth.
  • Serves as the staff liaison in the communication of results and actions being taken.
  • Travels within the assigned territory to facilitate profitable growth of commercial lines volume.
  • Pursues a program of continuing education by participating in industry sponsored and company sponsored educational courses.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor's degree in insurance or related field and 5-7 years minimum commercial lines management and/or marketing experience or equivalent industry experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach and lead others.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop a profitable commercial lines book of business.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of employees and management.
  • Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, employees, agents, and vendors.
  • Ability to project a warm and friendly manner in all business contacts and maintain a professional relationship with fellow workers, and agency contacts.
